Route description
Save cycle path – 58 km
The Save cycle path connects Carinthia, Slovenia and Italy. A special offer has now been put together around the cycle path. We have tested it exclusively for you and present you with all the information about the tour and which detours are really worthwhile!
The cycle path owes its name to Slovenia’s longest river: the Sava. The family-friendly cycle path (length: 41 km) leads from Jesenice, via Kranjska Gora, to Tarvisio. The continuously asphalted path runs partly through forests, over many bridges or along an abandoned railway line.
Gailtal Cycle Route – 45 km
This route leads from Hermagor in the Gailtal valley along the Drau river to Villach.
The Gailtal is a valley running from East Tyrol to Carinthia. It begins in Kartitsch and ends at Villach. The Gailtal valley is hydrogeographically not a single unit: the majority of the valley is drained by the Gail towards the east, where it ends at the village of Maria Gail into the Drau. The Gailtal valley is particularly attractive due to the contrast between the flat, wide valley floor and the sometimes rugged mountain slopes. It is bordered to the north by the Lienz Dolomites and the Gailtal Alps, and to the south by the Carnic Alps and Karawanken.
The strikingly straight furrow of the Gailtal valley is part of the Periadriatic Seam, which separates the Southern Alps from the Central Alps. In the lower reaches, the valley is characterised over a distance of around ten kilometres by the so-called Schütt, the deposition area of two mighty landslides, which fell from the Dobratsch (eastern foothills of the Gailtal Alps) in prehistoric times and in 1348.
Pontebbana cycle path – 50 km
In the north-east of Italy, in the border triangle between Austria, Italy and Slovenia, you will find one of the most beautiful railway cycle paths in Italy: the new cycle path on the old “Pontebbana” railway line. With funding from the EU, a 47-kilometre cycle path was created on the disused railway line from Tarvisio to Resiutta, which runs along the Fella River (Kanaltal / Valcanale) through the mountains of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
The section between Resiutta and Pietragliata in particular is dotted with tunnels and bridges, and the views of the river valley and the surrounding mountains are breathtaking. The route is very well developed and tarmaced, even if some shorter detours were necessary. 35 of the 50 kilometres are on the railway line. Only the bypasses offer a few short ascents/descents.</p
