The region of Wörthersee
Wörthersee caters not only for aquatic athletes and habitués of trendy beach bars: hikers also will have a lot of interesting places to discover at and around Wörthersee.
Everybody can find his ideal walking speed and route on the high 65km-long Wörthersee circular walking route. The route raises high in parts to vantage points that offer sights of the lake and the rock faces of the Karawanken well worth seeing and passes by dreamy pools and inviting farmhouses serving food and wine.
Those who do not want to do the whole route at one go can do it in smaller stages and return in comfort to their starting point courtesy of the Wörthersee shipping.
From Pörtschach you can reach the Hohe Gloriette with a wonderful view of the lake. In a short time you can reach the Forstsee with its numerous woody bays. It is ideal for those looking for peace and seclusion.
The region of Wörthersee is located in the centre of Carinthia, the most southern federal state of Austria, near to the border with Slovenia and Italy.
Shielded from the northern Alps, the south-west weather conditions provide for a pleasant, almost Mediterranean climate. Depending on the season, you can see either snow-covered mountain peaks or lilos on the lake.
In summer, temperatures can reach up to 35°C.
The water can reach up to 27°C. The lake is 17km long, 1,600m wide and 86m deep at its deepest point.
